How to Repair Your Home After a Flood

Aug 02, 2023

It's estimated that over 14.6 million homes across the US are at risk of flooding, according to iProperty Management. If your home experiences a flood, there are certain steps you need to take to get the repair process started, such as looking into a dehumidifier rental. Let's look at what you should do immediately after a flooding event.

Contact Your Insurance Company

Immediately following a flooding event, you need to contact your insurance company. You may need to report the event for both a flood policy and a homeowner's policy. The sooner you get your insurance company involved, the sooner you will be able to get the funds you need for repairs. It's also imperative that you contact them quickly, in case you will be in need of relocation service while your home is being renovated.

Call in Professionals

Your insurance company may have recommendations of a list of specialists that can help you with repairs, dehumidifier rental, and other necessary services to your home fixed. Not only will you need a water damage restoration company, but you may also be in need of a waste management company as well. There will be a lot of debris and discarded materials that may need to be taken out of your home such as carpeting and furniture.

In addition to these professionals, it may also be necessary to call in a remodeler as well. If you had significant damage to your floor or walls, they will be able to help you get these repairs done quickly.

Protect Yourself

You may need to do some work on your own in the first day or two following a flood event. If this is the case, you should make sure that you wear the proper protective gear to stay safe. Flooding can cause a lot of contamination. If there was any backed-up sewage, you must make sure that you are not exposed to it. You and any helpers should wear a face mask, long-sleeved shirt, pants, and gloves. Do not wear open-toed shoes during clean up either.

Start the Drying Process

You can start the drying process by opening up all windows and looking into a dehumidifier rental. These devices can really help dry up the spaces that were flooded. You should start cleaning up what you can by removing damaged furniture, personal belongings, and carpet if possible.
